Dasha Rani Bhagavati Worship Significance

It has been proved by Hindu sages that whatever change occurs, in the position of anything in the universe, is on account of the force of some supernatural power. That power is known as Dasha. When Dasha (condition) of a person is favourable, then it is his bliss, and when it is unfavourable, then the effect of even a good work, turns to be bad. This condition is addressed as Bhagavati or Dasha Rani.

Dasha Rani

Hindu women in India observe fast and worship Dasha Rani or Bhagavati, to be blessed with favourable conditions in once life. A vow to undertake fast in reverence to Dasha Rani, is resolved when news of the sprouting of herbs like Tulsi and other trees which have not been transplanted, of calving of a Kalori cow, of a mare delivering for the first time and when a woman delivers first child, is received. The essential condition is that the delivery should have taken place at an auspicious moment. Under such conditions, a knotted armlet, made out of ten thread lengths in the name of this deity, is taken. After the day long fast, the armlet is worshipped. The worship for first nine days is in the evening but it is in the midday on the tenth day. On the day of the fast, nothing even firewood is given to anyone, even guests are not allowed in, till worship on the tenth day is over.

There are nine stories related to this deity; which are recited one on each day of the fast. On the tenth day, after worship, story of the first day is repeated. These stories and legends applauded and glorify the blessings of the deity Dasha Rani. Only one story; the ninth day story; described here, relates to a female sparrow, which was sterile. Other sparrows ridiculed her and made mockers of her. Once, out of desperation, she was sitting along on the bank of a river; where many women were worshipping Dasha Rani and were taking her armlets. By chance, one armlet became extra. Seeing no other female, the women tied the armlet round the neck of the sparrow and explained to her the ritual of Dasha Rani's worship. The sparrow observed it religiously and she was awarded with many off springs, in due course. Other sparrows also followed her example and commenced undertaking fast in reverence to Dasha Rani (Bhagavati).
