Baldeo: Pilgrimage Travelogue of A Devotee

"Among the Nagas (a type of serpent), I am the Serpent God Ananta and among the aquatics, I am Varuna, the God of aquatics. Among the ancestors, I am Aryama and among the controllers of death, I am Lord Yama, the God of Death." (Bhagavad Gita 10.29)

Baldeo is a small town approximately 20 km south-east of Mathura, around seven kilometers from Mahavan. The famous temple of Lord Balarama, also known as Baldeo and Dauji, is in this town. It is believed that Lord Balarama, also known as Baldeo, used to rule here. This is how the town got its name. Baldeo is located at 27.42°N latitude and 77.82°E longitude.

Vehicles are not allowed near the temple complex Balarama. Ashwani had to park far away from the temple and I walked the distance through the narrow bylanes of this holy town. The temple has a huge courtyard. When I reached the temple, the huge main gate was closed. I waited for a long time for it to open, but there was no sign of anyone coming to open the gates. Suddenly, I noticed many devotees walking across the other side of the row of gift shops. I followed them. and noticed that there was one more gate to the right of the main gate, which was open and all the devotees entered the temple premises through this gate.

BALARAMA TEMPLE

The temple has a huge courtyard. When I reached the temple, the huge main gate was closed. I waited for a long time for it to open, but there was no sign of anyone coming to open the gates.       The deities here are Balarama and His wife, Revathi. The deity of Balarama is black and that of Revathi is white. Since Revathi's idol is placed on the side of the altar, it can be viewed only from the opposite side and not from the front. The deity of Balarama was installed by Vajranabha and is one of the biggest idols in Brij Bhoomi.

The cream-coloured walls surrounding the entire courtyard has dark blue inscriptions in Sanskrit and Hindi. The entire floor of the courtyard is made or white stones and marble. Initially, there were very few devotees and the place was very quiet. Suddenly, lots of devotees arrived and they began to sing songs related to Lord Balarama (Baldeo). The quiet atmosphere suddenly became festive.

KSHIR SAGARA KUND (BALBHADRA KUND)

Next to the Balarama Temple is the Kshir Sagara Kund, also known as Balbhadra Kund. It is known as Kshir Sagara Kund because it is believed that this kund was built by Brij people who filled it with milk from 1,00,000 cows as an offering to Lord Balarama. Kshir Sagara means sea of milk. This kund is also known as Balbhadra Kund since this is the tank where the original idol of Lord Balarama was found. The idol was lost for a long time but one night Saint Gokulnath had a dream and a divine voice told him that he would find the idol of Balarama in this sacred tank. The next morning, Saint Gokulnath found the idol of Balarama at the very spot indicated to him in the dream.
