Kansa Qila: Pilgrimage Travelogue of A Devotee

Kansa Qila means Kansa's fort. This is the place from where the tyrant king, Kansa, ruled Mathura and harassed its residents 5000 years ago. It is believed that the fort, which is in ruins today, was built by Raja Mansingh of Jaipur in the exact location where Kansa had built his palace. An observatory was built here later by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of Ajmer, who was very fond of astronomy.

This fort is on a small hillock and not very easily accessible by road. We drove halfway up the hillock and then had to walk the rest of the way on a narrow dusty path to reach the fort. There were hardly any visitors here. The entire fort was in ruins. Whatever was left, was not taken care of. No wonder the local guides were shocked when I told them that I wanted to visit Kansa Qila!

When I reached atop the hillock, I could see only the remains of a ruined fort. What might have been beautiful gardens a few centuries ago are now reduced to unkempt grasslands, with grass and weeds growing everywhere. As I gazed at the ruined fort, I could visualise the beautiful palace that stood in its place thousands of years ago. A palace that was home to the King of Mathura.
